Gag Season Is Over. Here's What Hernando Beach Anglers Can Still Keep Through December

The rock piles out past the Hernando Beach channel still hold big gag grouper. The fish didn't leave on October 1. Since then, every gag that comes over the gunwale goes straight back in the water, and the same is true of amberjack since October 14. If your fishing calendar runs on offshore grouper, it looks pretty empty right now.

Plenty is still open. The fish you can legally keep through New Year's have mostly moved close to home: into the canals, the creek mouths along Shoal Line Boulevard, and the hard bottom in 25 to 30 feet of water. And the state boundary that sets inshore limits puts Hernando Beach on its generous side, miles south of the county line.

What October closed

The 2026 Gulf gag season ran September 1 through 30 in state waters and the adjacent federal waters. Harvest closed at 12:01 a.m. on October 1 and stays closed for the rest of the year, according to FWC's August announcement. Greater amberjack came next. FWC's amberjack page lists the 2026 Gulf state-waters season as September 1 through October 13, matching the federal season. Federal waters closed at 12:01 a.m. on October 14 and stay shut until the next season opens September 1, 2027, per NOAA Fisheries.

The local guides had a good run before the closure. In the Tampa Bay Beacons' Hernando Fishin' Report from September 30, Capt. Josh Fritz called it a fantastic gag season, with big fish holding anywhere from 8 feet out to 50 feet. Those fish are still out there for catch-and-release. For dinner, look somewhere else.

The regulation line is at Fred Howard Park

For snook, redfish and trout, FWC splits the coast into management regions. Hernando County's Gulf waters belong to the Big Bend region. Big Bend doesn't end at the Hernando and Pasco county line. It runs south to Fred Howard Park, near the border of Pasco and Pinellas counties, and it includes the Anclote River and its tributaries. For seatrout, the exact boundary is a due east and due west line from the westernmost point of the Fred Howard Park Causeway.

That boundary got more important this year. FWC set up nine regional seatrout management regions with their own bag, slot and season rules, effective April 1, 2026, according to FWC's February announcement. Here's how Big Bend compares with the Tampa Bay region just south of the causeway:

Species Rule Big Bend, including Hernando Beach Tampa Bay region
Spotted seatrout Bag limit Five per person per day Three per person per day
Spotted seatrout Slot 15 to 19 inches total length 15 to 19 inches total length
Red drum Vessel limit Four Two
Red drum Bag and slot One per person, 18 to 27 inches One per person, 18 to 27 inches
Snook Bag and slot One per person, 28 to 33 inches One per person, 28 to 33 inches

Both trout regions allow one fish over 19 inches per vessel, or per person when fishing from shore, and it counts toward the bag. Trout and redfish are open year-round in both regions, so the gag closure doesn't touch them. These two species now carry most of the inshore season, and your home waters fall under the larger limits.

Where the keepers are now

The same September 30 report shows where the fish were heading as the water cooled, and most of it is a short ride from a Calienta Street dock.

  • The Hernando Beach canals. Sven at Bait & Tackle of Hernando Beach reported plenty of keeper mangrove snapper in the canals. He said chubs or shrimp catch them and chubs are better for the bigger fish.
  • Minnow Creek. The creek mouth had been giving up trout.
  • Bayou Drive in Bayport. The creeks along Bayou Drive turned up several species, including a couple of oversized redfish.
  • Jenkins Creek pier. Early mornings produced snook, reds and trout. The bite went cold once the sun got up.
  • Rocky islands, spoils and hard-bottom points. Capt. Josh Fritz had redfish schooling and staging there before moving into the back bays, with bigger trout moving shallower in October.

At Dixie Lee Bait & Tackle, Eric said cooler water might push snook off the outside points and bars toward the creek mouths or even inside the creeks.

The launch you pick depends on where you're headed. Hernando Beach Boat Ramp #1 is at 4483 Calienta St. Bayport Park, at 4140 Cortez Blvd., has a ramp, a fishing pier and a parking fee. Rogers Park, at 7244 Shoal Line Blvd., puts you on the Weeki Wachee River and is open around the clock. Jenkins Creek Park, at 6401 Shoal Line Blvd., is for small boats and canoes.

Snook has a deadline

Snook is the one inshore species on a clock. Harvest is open through November 30, then closes from December 1 through the end of February. The limit is one fish per person per day in the 28 to 33 inch slot, and those numbers are the same in Big Bend and Tampa Bay, per FWC's August snook release.

So November is the last month you can keep one. If the fish really do follow Eric's read into the creek mouths as the water cools, the end of the snook season lines up with snook being easier to reach from a small boat or the Jenkins Creek pier.

Red snapper weekends, and the 80-foot catch

Florida's private-angler red snapper season runs through the holidays this year. FWC added eight days to the 2026 Gulf season, including a continuous October 9 to 22 stretch, and then scheduled more weekends and holidays through December. Here are the remaining open days from FWC's snapper page:

  1. October 30 to November 1, Friday through Sunday
  2. November 7 and 8, 14 and 15, 21 and 22
  3. November 26 to 29, Thanksgiving weekend
  4. December 5 and 6, 12 and 13, 19 and 20
  5. December 25 to 27, Christmas weekend
  6. January 1 to 4, 2027, daily

The limit is two fish per person at a 16-inch minimum, counted within the state's 10-snapper aggregate. The schedule covers private vessels in Gulf state and federal waters, plus charter boats without a federal permit fishing in state waters only. Federally permitted for-hire boats are a separate case. NOAA Fisheries closed their red snapper season at 12:01 a.m. on October 26, and those vessels can't fish for or keep red snapper in state or federal waters while it stays closed. If you're booking a December charter to keep red snapper, ask which kind of permit the boat carries.

Then there's the depth. Capt. Mike Senker told the Beacons that anglers generally need to reach 80 feet or deeper for reliable red snapper. For comparison, Hernando County's own markers put A.H. Richardson Reef and Jim Champion Reef at 20 feet, Bendickson Tank Reef at 25 and Reef Ball Reef at 29. Eighty feet is close to three times deeper than the deepest reef the county charts. Off this shallow shelf, the snapper weekends are a long-run trip for boats built for it. Someone did land one red snapper in 50 feet. The Beacons noted it was a schooling species, "so unless it was a fish with a bad sense of direction it's likely more were with it."

What carries the boat through December

Most of what stays open, per FWC's pages for groupers, hogfish, triggerfish and snappers, sits in the water Hernando Beach boats already fish. Senker reported a hot mangrove snapper bite on nice fish in 25 feet, with some keeper hogfish possible at that depth and better odds deeper. Eric at Dixie Lee called the snapper bite on rocky bottom and ledges in 25 to 30 feet "extraordinary," with big fish and frequent limits. The county's Reef Ball Sites A, B and C sit 2.9, 3.9 and 3.7 miles from the Hernando Beach Channel.

Species Season through year end Size and limit
Red grouper Open year-round 20 inches total length, two per person within the four-grouper aggregate
Hogfish Open year-round in state waters 14 inches fork length, five per harvester
Gray triggerfish Open through December 31 15 inches fork length, one per person
Lane snapper Open year-round in state waters 10 inches total length, 20 per person
Mangrove and vermilion snapper Open year-round See FWC's snapper table

The lane snapper numbers are new this year. Since April 1, 2026, the state-waters minimum went from 8 to 10 inches and a 20-fish bag limit applies, per FWC. Capt. Josh also said red grouper had been showing up on several trips, some in fairly shallow water. Kingfish are worth watching too. One early-season jumbo king had already been landed off Hernando, and the guides expected more as the fish migrate south for winter.

On December 12, the Hernando Beach Christmas Boat Parade runs out of Hernando Beach Yacht Club at 4163 Shoal Line Blvd., supporting Toys for Tots. It falls on a red snapper weekend, so you could run deep that morning and still be back in time to string the lights.

These rules can change mid-season. NOAA notes that its closure summaries are informational and that the Federal Register controls. This post is general information, not legal advice. Check FWC and NOAA before each trip, especially on the snapper weekends.
